I finally nabbed a copy of this book, it’s definitely the best Knaak has ever written for Warcraft. As usual he nailed Night Elf society, but more impressingly, he nailed Varian’s character.
I rather enjoyed the book, it did a lot for the Alliance story overall and really pushed some awesome story points to be explored in the future, as well as giving the Gilneans/Worgen the spotlight. The combat scenes were delightfully written and reminded me why Night Elves are totally badass, and I enjoyed how Garrosh was represented, as a cunning and tactical enemy, but they used the Alliance perspective really well in making a villain of him. Varian is a hot headed douchenozzle as per usual and lets his Lo’gosh side dominate conversation, but in the way that makes you super interested in reading it. There were a few dialogue exchanges between Malfurion and Varian that were awesome to read. I really want to see this Varian in game more, I hope we get that in MoP.
Good read! I definitely recommend it to any fan of the franchise, even if they have trepidations about reading Richard Knaaks books, it steers clear of a lot of the mistakes he has the tendency to make.
Just felt like ranting about this.
